20:TWELVE – Memory Box (2nd place vimeo weekend project entry)

2 ski trips to Austria, the Olympic torch rolled into town, Wales vs Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Amelia finishing 2nd at the URDD Eisteddfod, in Snowdonnia North Wales. Our school sports day, another summer in the Vendée, France. The annual September fair in Neath, Guy Fawkes night, through to Christmas. This is our story of 2012.

The power of Vimeo

I still can’t quite believe it yet, but my children, Joseph and Amelia have gone viral, with their inclusion in the latest Google Chromebook Ad campaign (4 sec’s into the Ad) which aired in the UK on Saturday 17th Nov 2012. In media ad slots during primetime TV, during shows like The X-Factor and I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here!

And it’s all down to the power of Vimeo that the clip was found by STALKR, a creative collective of independent filmmakers and archive experts working globally from London who approached me with the view to using the clip in an unnamed project, which later turns out to be on behalf of ‘Bartle Bogle Hegarty’ http://www.bartleboglehegarty.com, one of the world’s leading advertising agencies, to use the clip of them playing boules at my mother-in-law’s house in France.

The clip was originally shot whilst on holiday in France this summer and featured in my film “En Vacances’, which you can watch by clicking on the link.

I’m sure these guys aren’t the best out there, but these Freestyle ‘Slackliners’ or ‘Trickliners certainly entertained the crowd at the OutDoor Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany last week.

Freestyle slacklining (a.k.a. “rodeo slacklining”) is the art and practice of cultivating balance on a piece of rope or webbing draped slack between two anchor points, typically about 15 to 30 feet long and a couple feet off the ground in the center. This type of very “slack” slackline provides a wide array of opportunities for both swinging and static maneuvers. A freestyle slackline has no tension in it, while both traditional slacklines and tightropes are tensioned. This slackness in the rope or webbing allows it to swing at large amplitudes and adds a different dynamic. This form of slacklining first came into popularity in 1999, through a group of students from Colby College, in Waterville ME. It was first written about on a website called the “Vultures Peak Center for Freestyle and Rodeo Slackline Research” in 2004. The article “Old Revolution – New Recognition – 3-10-04″ describes these early developments in detail.

This is my submission for the Weekend Project: ‘Your Summer So Far’, which after seeing this film you’ll be left wondering, where’s the summer? As we in Wales and the UK this year are.

British Summertime officially started on the 28th March and since then, we’ve rain, rain and more rain. I’d go as far to say that its probably been the wettest British Summer that I can remember, if not ever.
So, not wanting to be left out, I’ve made a short film from some of the footage that I shot a few weekends ago at a family BBQ, where there the sun didn’t shine and we didn’t finish the night off with fireworks. Just some hot dogs and burgers, washed down with a few cold beers.

Visit Wales, holiday in the rain.

I remember sport’s day being one my favourite days of the whole year when I was at school; egg & spoon race, relay running & sack race. Watching our children enjoy it gives me such a thrill and takes me right back.

This year’s Mabolgampau (sports day) at Joseph & Amelia’s school, Ysgol Gymraeg Castell-nedd was held at Neath Cricket Ground and was another gem as well as being one of the best days of the summer so far.
