Following on from the 12 object films that I created on the themes of the ‘Tir Sir Gâr’ theatrical production, I shot 12 ‘SEIAT’ lecture talks at St. Peter’s Hall, in Carmarthen over 12 days. 12 diverse topics and characters to match, talking on one of the themes of the project (mostly in Welsh).

Back in February, I was commissioned by the writer Roger Williams (Gwaith/Catref, Caerdydd – S4C) of Joio, an independent TV production company to produce 12 films of 12 objects from the Carmarthen County Museum, chosen by the artist Marc Rees to represent the 12 themes of the theatre project ‘Tir Sir Gâr‘. These films tell the story of those objects.

Well the new academic year is well underway at Swansea Metropolitan University and its just dawned on me that I’ve been bit quiet on the blog front. So I thought I’d post here about one my recent quickfire briefs to the 3rd year group.

The whole idea about my sessions, is getting them to think quickly and under pressure, with little or no time to research the subject matter in front of them. As my experience tell’s me that there’s no substitute for being able to think quickly and on your feet. This is an especially important skill, that if they master, will aide them throughout their careers. As spending weeks researching, developing, refining and finally realising a concept, is the process that they must employ whilst at university. But in a new business pitch or presentation, that isn’t going as well as you imagined, that is the time when you got to think on your feet and fast if you or your agency are going to secure the job.

So, we’ve been tackling lots of issues these last few weeks and I dropped a little light hearted one into the pot. The kind of brief that you’d get to work on in a regional agency, promoting tomorrow’s Wales vs Australia Rugby match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. But this time, it was time to put my money where my mouth is, I had a go too! Same research & time constraints as them and had to present it back to them.

Here’s the brief and my solution:

After Wales’ defeat to Australia during this years rugby world cup, is any game ever a friendly?

Introduction

Wales take on Australia at the Millennium Stadium, on Saturday 3rd December 2011, KO 14:30pm. Although billed as a friendly match, Wales hope to build on their successful run during the RWC 2011 campaign, with captain Sam Warburton, back at the helm. It’s also an opportunity to take revenge for their 4th finish, as well as the taking of a southern hemisphere scalp in the process.

Tickets are priced at £50 & £65

The brief
As purse strings tighten in these difficult financial times, spending £50 – £65 per ticket is becoming a big ask, with previous autumn international games having seen their support and numbers through the turnstiles diminish. Devise a campaign concept that can be used throught Wales, that builds on their recent successes, one which encourages rugby fans to get back out and support their team in Cardiff.

I’m not generally one for blowing my own trumpet, but feel it’s worth sharing on this occasion. Back a few weeks ago week my 3rd year students at Swansea Metropolitan University held their final exhibition at the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, where they presented me with book containing individual appraisals of their experience with me as their tutor in Advanced Creative Enquiry.

Here’s what they had to say:

In the news this week is my recently designed, Cardiff Employee Survey carried out by Cardiff Business School for Cardiff Business Partnership (CBP) an organisation representing major employers in the City.

The report highlights the opinions of Cardiff employees with the biggest concerns being; transport and infrastructure, particularly congestion and the availability of parking and poor public transport.

Click on the report cover and you will be magically transported to Issuu, where you will be able to see it in all it’s glory.

Full Fat Creatives-class Of 2011, originally uploaded by the journey starts here.

The Full Fat Creatives were in the studio, bright and breezy this morning at Swansea Metropolitan University. Straightening their hair, lipstick on… and that was the boys.

With preparation fully underway for their final show, which is being held at The National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, today marked their photo shoot and mug shots for the exhibition.

And as it was one of the few days that I’ve seen them all together this year, I thought I’d mark the occasion with a pic them and one of of my own in the spirit of their theme.

Being a Creative Director is sometimes compared to being a dictator, so I thought I’d personify ‘The Full Fat Fascist’.

I recently got involved in producing some design ideas for a fundraising ‘Bag for Life‘ for Cymdeithas Rieni, Parents Association at Ysgol Gymraeg Castell-nedd, my children’s school. Sara and I bounced off a few ideas, wanting to produce a design that appealed to both Welsh & English speaking parents whilst firmly being distinctly a Welsh bag and not just another generic reusable bag. So the double meaning concept of Caru Cymru, loving Wales and that you’re carrying a bag and Wales around with you whenever you take it, came to light. It’s definitely inspired by the ’I heart NYC’ logo designed by Milton Glaser, but hopefully works in it’s own right.

Here is the final design selected by the committee along with two other idea’s submitted. It’s the first tote bag I’ve designed and hopefully not the last, although I’ll reserve judgement until I see the finished items, which should be arriving soon. Will update with a photo of the bags at a later date as well as where to purchase and their cost.

After the success shown by my third year group on the Vote 2011 creative project (see previous posts) before Christmas, I thought I’d give my first group the same opportunity and it gives me a chance to assess how differently they tackle creative problems at their early stage of development.

Taken from the Assembly website – here are a few hints & points of reference for my 1st year group to check out, which hopefully should inform and inspire their creative thinking.

The National Assembly for Wales has produced a series of videos designed to inspire and inform Wales’s younger generation about the choices open to them in the year of Vote 2011.

The videos cover subjects including who is eligible to vote, how to register to vote and what to expect on polling day.

The videos are part of the National Assembly’s wider campaign of providing unbiased and impartial information on what the referendum on future legislative powers and the assembly election means for the Welsh public.

For the first time the Assembly has also produced a video in British sign language to reach a wider audience – an audio only version will also be released soon.

Further videos including one explaining what the referendum on 3 March is about will be published on the National Assembly website over the coming weeks.

Presiding Officer, Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM, said: “We are committed to inspiring the people of Wales to get involved with the democratic process.

“These videos are specifically targeted at the younger generation and designed to inform without preaching and offer an unbiased, impartial approach.

“They are part of our wider campaign of innovative use of new media and social networks to reach people we would otherwise miss through more traditional channels.”

The videos are available to view and link to from the National Assembly’s Vote 2011 page as well as its Facebook, Youtube and Vimeo pages.
